Introduction: Indigenous Land Management, Venezuela

The case study will explore Indigenous fire management as a Land-based Mitigation Technology (LMT). It aims to develop new programs and policies to reduce wildfire occurrence and deforestation in the Canaima National Park (CNP, 30.000 km2), Venezuela.

Fire has an essential role in Indigenous peoples' lives in the Amazon region of South America. Growing scientific evidence reveals that Indigenous land-use practices, such as fire, have a fundamental role in controlling deforestation, reducing the occurrence of catastrophic wildfire events, decreasing CO2 emission levels, and enhancing biodiversity in forested areas.

The study will promote policy change from fire suppression to participative land management based on Indigenous fire knowledge and the engagement of different stakeholders.
