The Netherlands is a highly-income, small country, in which much of the territory lies at almost sea level, resulting in a high presence of wetlands. It has a high population density and intensive farming activity, intended to cover both domestic and international demand. This results in high land competition, with a small share of forest and natural areas. Both agricultural and livestock sectors are highly mechanized, but there is space for improvement in carbon sequestration. The Netherlands has also committed to increasing its forest coverage by 10% by 2030. Considering all these characteristics, the selected LMTs in the Netherlands are peatland management, afforestation/reforestation, agroforestry, and BECCS.
Introduction: Peat Soils (Paludiculture) in the Netherlands
Sustainable peatland management practices, such as paludiculture, are crucial for restoring degraded peatland ecosystems. Paludiculture involves wet cultivation practices in peatlands and can maintain peat bodies and sustain ecosystem services.
Introduction: Agroforestry in the Netherlands
This case study is investigating improved carbon storage in soils and trees in the Netherlands
