Introduction: Pastures for carbon and biodiversity, Portugal/Spain
This case study will explore the potential of carbon storage in soils and pastures in Portugal and Spain.
The Southern European countries of Portugal and Spain could improve soil CO2 sequestration rates through very simple practices available to any farmer. We estimate that a 1% increase in soil organic matter could be achieved in 50% of the permanent pastures. In this way, 134 million tons of CO2 could be sequestered annually into the soil.
