Introduction: Forest Management, Germany
How can forestry, forest restoration, and conservation in Germany contribute to climate change mitigation? This case study aims to find an answer.
Managed forests in the EU and other industrialized countries currently absorb more carbon than they emit. German forests have high carbon stocks, however in the past small forest owners have tended to underutilize their forest resources. Currently, few monetary incentives exist for maintaining and enhancing carbon stocks in forests.
This case study aims to develop a Land Based Mitigation (LMT) concept for robust forestry, forest restoration, and conservation strategies in Germany. This will include results-based finance mechanisms for carbon accounting and crediting.
